There are a wide variety of backyard heating options to choose from. One of the options that has become more popular over the last few years are table top patio heaters. These are small devices that sit in the middle of a table that will help keep those around the table and on the patio a bit warmer than without it. There are advantages that this type of device does offer.

The first is that you have nothing large or bulky sitting on your porch or patio area. Many times the larger heaters take up space. For small patios this is a problem. A table heater won’t do this to you as it rests on the table that is already there.

These heaters are also very easy to move. This is important for a few reasons. First it makes it easy to put out on the table and put away. Secondly, these types of heaters work best and have a much longer lifespan when you bring them indoors to protect them when not in use. This is easiest done with a portable heater like this.

These types of heaters run on propane. This means that you don’t have to have natural gas line or electrical cords on your patio area to worry about bumping or tripping over. Also with propane you are free to put the heater wherever you wish.

Not only do you get heating but you also get a side benefit of a bit of light over the table area. With eating food or reading, this is an advantage since that little bit of light will make things easier to see. The heat is sufficient for those around the table. While this won’t heat as well as a full sized model, it does exactly what it needs to be doing.

These devices have a lower cost. This means in many cases you can get two of these smaller ones for the price of a large model. With two, you have more options of heating the yard giving you an advantage over just one.

When I was younger and living in Maine with my cousin, we found that even in Maine during a mild winter two of these on the porch were sufficient that we could sit outside on the patio most of the winter, except when the wind was blowing hard. Now your mileage will vary, but extending the comfortable outside season or even part of the day is a wonderful thing!

In an era where people are seeking out environmentally friendly flooring choices along with all their other environmentally friendly products it can be confusing when trying to decide which flooring choice to go with, either bamboo or cork flooring.

Both bamboo and cork are environmentally friendly flooring options that will save many hundreds of trees from being harvested simply so that a home can have beautiful hardwood floors. Bamboo is considered a green choice because of how fast it can replenish itself. In a short three to five years a bamboo garden can be ready for a second harvest while it can take up to a hundred years for a forest of trees to be ready to use as flooring. Cork on the other hand is plentiful and doesn’t kill the tree it is taken from. The outer bark is used to make the cork which means the tree can continue to live and grow. The cork can be re-harvested many times over during the life of the tree.

The pros and cons of these two floorings are minute and either one makes a beautiful flooring. Cork is great for high traffic areas because it is less susceptible to dings and marks. The cork actually cushions and is more flexible than bamboo. Cork is also more suitable for rooms with moisture than bamboo since moisture can damage bamboo flooring over a long time period.

The downside to cork is that should it need to be replaced the entire flooring will have to be replaced it is not as simple as replacing a plank like would be done with bamboo flooring.

Both bamboo and cork flooring are beautiful, green flooring options that will last for many years. Bamboo, particularly engineered bamboo, can be installed by most do-it-yourselfers while cork should be installed by a professional flooring installer. Regardless of who does the installation and what type of flooring is chosen, both bamboo and cork are ideal hardwood flooring alternatives to traditional hardwood trees.

When you brief your interior designer, make sure you lay special emphasis on one aspect of the exterior design as well. Yes, we are talking about the front doors of your house. As you take your routine morning walk in the neighborhood, what do you notice? You pass by hundreds of houses and all you take away is how the front doors looked. When someone visits you for the first time, the front door can set the mood for the entire visit. Often it is a great topic of conversation, if you are entertaining some guests for dinner.

There is a lot of variety when it comes to deciding, what your front door should look like. Many people are obsessed with wood and the finery that come along with classic teak and hardwood. But wooden front doors can be very difficult to maintain and are overtly expensive. There is no denying that they look very classy and elegant. So if you have a housekeeper and lot of money to spare go ahead and ask your interior designer to carve you a classic wooden front door. However, if you have a budget when it comes to doing up your home. And you want something classy, yet elegant at an affordable price, there are many options available in the market to choose from.

If you are in love with the environment and lead a particularly Eco friendly life, UPVC doors should sound perfect for your home. These doors come with double glazed glass and are made from UPVC that is absolutely environment friendly. The material can be recycled and is very easy to maintain. They offer comfort as they prevent noise pollution and are sturdy enough to handle harsh climatic conditions. Today, UPVC doors are not just available in white. They come in various colors and can often give you a finish that replicates wood. UPVC doors are the most inexpensive doors you will find in the market today.

Well, if you are still facing some difficulty in deciding what you should go in for, when it comes to front doors, let us give you one more option. Composite doors are also becoming very popular today. With a choice of steel-aluminum, UPVC and fiber glass composites to choose from, you can make a decision based on what composite suits your requirement best. These doors are relatively more expensive than the non composite variety of UPVC, but come with the same benefits. They are very easy to maintain and with their special protection layer, they do not fade or discolor easily.

Now that you have a variety of choices, make sure you make an informed decision. After all it’s the front door of your house. Figure out how you want your neighbors to perceive of you and go from there. The most important thing however, is to consider the safety aspect, speak to your architect or designer, which door would provide the best safety features for your newly acquired home.

Roller garage doors are more like solid curtains of metal rather than doors as we know them. Regardless, they serve the purpose of restricting and allowing access very well. Aside from being secure, they are also convenient.

Roller garage doors can be analyzed as three separate component groups. The first is the curtain, the second is the driving mechanism, and the third is the control system. The curtain is a flexible sheet made of many horizontal strips jointed at the top and bottom. These joints provide secure interlocking as well as enough flexibility for rolling up. The driving mechanism is an electric motor attached to the curtain or to the curtain’s central rod, and it serves as the source of kinetic energy to roll the curtain up automatically. Lastly, the control system includes the devices for activating the drive mechanism, such as wall-mounted control panels, remote control units, and others.

Roller garage doors save space both in front of and inside the garage. Because the bulk of the system is mounted directly above the doorframe, you have more overhead space inside the garage. You have more space in front of the garage because the door does not have to swing out or upward to let the vehicles in or out.

One problem that can occur with roller garage doors is noise. This is likely to be the result of sudden starts and stops of the driving mechanism, or loosely-jointed curtain components. Higher-end models have features that counter act this problem, by using smart speed control systems, lighter curtain materials, tight but flexible joints, and more. As an example, roller garage doors by Hormann are among the very best.

With roller garage doors, you can just roll up and roll out – or in as the case may be. When you are inside the garage, you may be unaware of potential obstructions right outside your door for garage. With doors for garage that swing out or up, you have to worry about hitting something, or worse, someone. With the roller type of doors for garage though, you won’t have to worry about anything swinging out and connecting. Short of actually leaning on the curtain, there is no way that a roller garage door can hurt someone or damage anything as a result of the opening operation.

There are lots of safety and security features included in these doors too. The door is secured by a physical component in the driving mechanism instead of a lock on the curtain, meaning that the lock cannot be picked or popped open. An automatic cut-off system will stop operation upon impact, or if an obstruction is detected using optional integrated infrared sensors. High-tech keys, secure remote transmissions, and even biometric readers mean that entering without authorization is nigh impossible. Emergency release and locking mechanisms secure or release the door with manual effort in the case that the power is out.

Hormann makes not only roller types, but all sorts of doors for garage, and they can even retrofit your exiting garage. They provide complete solutions, lots of options, and the quality of their work is top class.

There are various doors in the house but the entrance composite doors are different. It not only displays the personality of the owner but is constructed to keep away unwanted entrant. Door also gives the first impression of what type of decors to expect inside. Composite doors are a novel transition in door technology. There is balance proportion and rhythm in construction giving it a sense of unity. Usually more than one material is utilized in creating it. It has features of present day PVC doors and the appeal of traditional wooden door. The space in between the layers is filled with insulating foam core. In spite of all the qualities it is inexpensive and within reach of an ordinary man. The use of these doors is very much evident in commercial complex as well.

The market is flooded with cheap duplicate composite doors. It is difficult to judge by appearance the quality of material used in the doors. The inexpensive door gets out of shape in summers; at times PVC door because of outside similarity with between the two products. The confusion is attributed also the exterior resemblance of PVC doors and the composite doors.

The trend for composite doors began with wooden composite doors and theses were patronized by the cream of society in their homes. Soon through the dealer network the craze demand was met in the whole of Britain for homes and builders. Soon wood was replaced by different synthetic material and it was easy to maintain more durable and hygienic. The material selected for its construction was based on individual qualities considerations.

Visibly stocky and in use durable doors were actually light in weight. Compared to wooden doors they were unlikely to curl and go out of shape on exposure to heat; the reinforced skin gave it a backing and the finish was that of grained wood. The skin took all the rough impacts without denting and the locks fitted firmly for ling stretch of time. The cleaning is an easy wipe with wet cloth. As no paint is used the doors did not fade or show ugly chip out with use. The door was padded with foam giving it excellent insulation qualities. In the beginning only the elites could afford it but with more competition the prices were scaled down and it was within the reach of the general public, Soon the tradition wooden doors were outdated by this new product. The life predicted for these doors is 35 years.

The product has found approval of the security agencies and insurance people. Thieves find it difficult to break open the lock. Insurance agencies are prepared to offer some discount on houses installed with these doors. The harsh weather of heat and monsoons does not spoil its durability. People look at it as one time investments giving long term returns.

The one important message this door carries is stop chopping the trees and save the environment. The doors can be customized in design color and style of your over home theme. Innovative material like glass can be attached to it. Support it for a cause.

Hanging doors is no easy task. In fact, it is a task which requires some excellent carpentry work and skill. The first step to hanging a door is buying a door that is right in terms of material and style. If you are fitting one door inside your home, make sure it is the same or near enough the same as the other doors you have. Secondly, make sure you know whether you want to go for a chipboard door or a hardwood door.

Depending on whether you are going to be fitting a lock to the door or not this is very important. If you are fitting a lock and you buy a chipboard door, you must ensure you know which side of the door is the handle side door. The reason for this is that the lock side has a block of wood that you can drill into to fit the lock. If you drill into the wrong side of the door (which is chipboard) the lock will obviously not stay and you will waste the door.

Once you have bought the door, the first step to prepare it to hang will be measuring the door way. As time goes on, door ways and architraves can change shape, becoming almost unique in their specific shape. Once you have the measurements, you will need a plainer to carve the sides of the door down to size.

As you do this, you must regularly check the door against the door way as you could go too far and make the door too small for the frame. If you have a hardwood door, you can use jigsaw power tools to cut them down to size, however a plainer is a much better and smoother power tool to complete the job. Once you have got the door to size, your next job will be too fit the handle and hinges.

To fit the handle and lock, you will need to chisel and drill out the shape of the set that you have bought. Once you have done this you will then need to chisel out two or three areas on the back of the door where the hinges will be fitted. When doing this you must ensure the hinges are flush to the door and do not overlap or extend out. This is important to ensure the door hangs at the right height and distance from the frame.

Once you have done this and screwed in the hinges, your door is ready to be hanged.

There are different types of gutters available for the buildings. They can be built with different materials and they have different properties. Naturally, it is important that you have some basic idea about what to prefer among them. When it comes to the look and usability of the gutters, the aluminium gutters definitely have an edge over the other types. It is because of these benefits that the aluminium gutters are so much preferred by the home owners.

One of the greatest benefits of the aluminium gutters is that they are useful in all the different climates. Also, they are light and the installation process of these gutters is very easy as well. Finally, since they are not made of metal, there is no risk of it being rusty.

That means, there is very little effort that you have to put for the maintenance of these gutters. This is something that the vinyl gutters will provide you with as well. However, one great thing that is exclusive with the aluminium gutters is that they appear seamless. This is a huge advantage since that eliminates the problem of sectional gutters setting apart from those joints.

As you can see, the aluminium gutters are profitable because they need very little of maintenance. They are light and yet they have the strength to counter any type of weather. However, if you want to make the most of your aluminium gutters, you need to ensure that they are clean. Here again, you have an advantage – cleaning the aluminium gutters is a very simple task. It will not take too much of time and it is very easy to learn the process of cleaning these gutters.

However, there are some factors that you need to check out to make sure that you are taking proper care of the aluminium gutters. For example, you have to keep a check on the twigs, dirt, leaves, insect and some other debris. Otherwise, they can do a lot of damage to your aluminium guttering. Cleaning them off may appear to be a bit different at the initial stage. However, the more you do this, the easier the process will be.

Another great thing with the aluminum gutter is that they are available in a number of different shapes and styles. For example, you can go for the half round, bullnose, beaded deep flow, box, raked, shaped and many other styles. This will make sure that you are getting the gutters that you have been looking for in your specific projects. Also, they have a great longevity and you can get them at a more affordable price as well.

The window scarf valance can give any window or window decor a touch of flair. There are many different colors, fabrics and textures to choose from. They can be used with many types of window coverings, such as drapery panels, blinds, shades and even by themselves. They can also be paired with others of the same or a different color, for a more interesting look. You can create many different looks or styles with window scarf valances, though they are mostly made in the same shape and length. The greatest advantage to using this type of window treatment or accent, is that it can go from classic to contemporary with a few tucks or twists.

For a classic look, the scarf window valance can be draped over the ends of the drapery rods with a large scallop in the middle. It can also be draped over the rod several times, for a more stylized effect. The advantage is that you are not limited to one style placement. Pairing this window treatment with sheer panels provides a rich look.

It also dresses up blinds and plain shades. For room decor with a variety of fabrics and textures, the scarf valance window treatment is also available in textured fabric. This can enhance the look of plain drapery panels and draw more attention to the windows, if desired.

Though scarf window valances are designed as window accents, they can also become the focal point of the window treatment. Many people choose to place them with one end longer than the other, to help draw attention to a specific room location, or to make the room look a bit larger. Another option is to drape the scarf over both ends of the rod, letting one side fall down naturally across the window on an angle, to form a triangular pattern. This can be softened with several waves or scallops, by creating or using a drapery tie of soft fabric on the wider side of the scarf.

The sheer window scarf valance is wonderful for layering color. It provides an additional color accent, when used with drapes or other window treatments in a coordinating color. It may also be used to give draperies and darker shade or tone. When used by themselves, the scarves can be combined with others in similar or coordinating colors, to provide a richer, more layered look. There is no trick to using the window scarf valance properly. It is a matter of taste and style. You can experiment with this type of window accent to create your own style as well.

Here in Edmonton, Alberta, as the days get shorter and the sun sinks lower in the sky, sunlight streaming through the windows can become an annoying distraction. wood shutters could be your answer. Not to mention the neighbors who have more evening hours to look into your brightly lit living room. Once again, wood shutters could be your answer. You could put up shades to foil prying eyes, but a pair of swinging shutters would definitely be more interesting.

Wood shutters are a great way to add architectural and historical detail. Shutters help windows do their job better, keeping out the elements, whether it’s winter’s chilly winds or summer’s oppressive heat. And easy to install on any window because they attach to a thin frame that either sits inside the window opening or around the outside of the casing. As long as the frame is positioned correctly, the wood shutters will swing freely – and close out the day’s distractions with a satisfying click. Are these your answer?

Wood shutters can be an expensive alternative to your design theme. There didn’t used to be as many choices there are today. Some were either made of wood, metal or stone. Materials had to be harvested or mined and then fashioned into whatever shape needed to construct the finished product your wood shutters. Today it is much different. New, synthetic and composite materials are cropping up everywhere and are proving to be not only a viable alternative to natural materials, but one that makes life a bit easier when choosing your wood shutters.

The shutters are constructed by stapling the slats with tiny staples to the frame of the wood. This can cause a problem over time with the staples working their way out of the wood shutters. Then the slats to the wood shutters start to fall out. The slats on faux wood shutters are able to be attached with strong adhesives that don’t become detached with time.

With faux shutters, there is no change in size or shape just because of the weather. Faux wood shutters can also maintain a bright finished look without frequent painting. Your shutters can be washed with mild detergents and look as new as the day they were installed. Many are treated with dust repellents too. This causes dust in the air to flutter on by instead of sticking to the wood’s surface. This makes housekeeping chores much lighter. Wood shutters can require very frequent dusting to keep them clean.

The best thing about faux wood shutters is that they can be used inside and outside the window. These resist fading in the sunlight too. Also can be used alone in interior decorating, or in place of a shade or sheers as a backdrop to draperies or valances.

Exterior

What is the best wood to use for exterior shutters? The best wood for exterior use is cedar because of its outstanding durability and resistance to decay. Cedar gives long service with little maintenance in applications such as mud sills, window sashes, sheathing under stucco or brick veneer construction, wood shutters, greenhouse benches, fencing, poles, trellises, and exterior shutters. Cedar is also used extensively for exterior siding because it is dimensionally stable and holds paint well, in addition to being a deterrent to bugs.

Installing exterior wood shutters is a relatively quick way to add style and color to the outside of a house. Historical and modern houses alike benefit from the timeless style of wood shutters. As with any home improvements, the quality and longevity of an addition should be evaluated before proceeding. Exterior shutters are available in many shapes and materials as are interior shutters.

The windows to your home should reflect your personality and style. Solid wood shutters are available in a wide variety of styles and materials, and will make any home they adorn stand out. Besides lowering the cost of heating and cooling your home, shutters also protect your draperies, furniture, and carpet from sun damage.

Being exposed to the sun can damage curtains and other cloths. Bright colors and dark colors may fade or streak; eventually, even dry rot may set in on draperies. Leather furniture can also be damaged by the sun´s rays.

Historically, homes had shutters for protection from the sun as well as the elements. Most styles of exterior shutters afford homeowners good protection against various weather conditions. Custom wood shutters also protect against winds, snow, and hail. During the summer, close the shutters on the windows where the rising or setting sun shines in. In winter, close the shutters that might be exposed to the north wind, or when a storm is coming.

To cool your home in an environmentally way, consider louvered shutters. Louvered shutters have several slats laid across the frames, with small gaps between them. Closing them allows you to air out your home without letting in too much heat or sun.

Durability

Look for a company that produces timeless and durable premium-quality exterior shutters. Unfinished shutters can be made to suit the tastes and needs of homeowners. Because the wood used to construct exterior shutters is durable yet soft, the pieces can be carved into many different shapes and sizes.

Different woods are suited to different climates. Look for custom shutters made with top quality, FAS premium-grade hard woods. Choose from poplar wood, teak wood, mahogany wood, cherry wood, cedar wood, maple wood, and oak wood. Spanish Cedar is a hardwood that is dimensionally stable and has lots of natural resistance to moisture, decay, fungus and insects.

Custom shutters made from whole-cut solid wood will be less prone to problems like cracks, low-quality joins, thin filler wood, or other inferior milling techniques that can cause shutters to leak warm air in the winter or cool air in the summer. When shutters are made from one solid piece of wood, they are stronger and more energy efficient.

Customization

Get the exact shutters that you want by choosing from custom mouldings, carvings, hardware, and more. Get great-looking shutters by having them painted in a color that pops! Alternatively, you can keep unfinished shutters for a rugged look.

Homeowners who want to add highly functional and versatile accents to their living spaces should also consider shutters. Constructed of durable materials, engineered to withstand weather, and customized to suit a range of tastes, custom wood shutters are pleasing additions to countless styles of architecture. Even indoor wood shutters make a room more exciting.

Historic panel shutters suit the Queen Anne-style, ornate houses of San Francisco as well as the stately Tudor apartment homes of Pittsburgh. In addition, custom wood shutters inspired by American frontier stylesare often seen on concrete homes, and add country charm to expansive ranch homes.

Other wood shutter styles can be used to enhance the architectural lines of a home. Large homes with many windows look fantastic when each window is framed by indoor wood shutters. Meanwhile, tall, slender buildings achieve pleasing proportional balance with the addition of Bahama shutters that jut out in salute from the windows.

In addition, you have the option to customize your exterior shutters to fit your windows seamlessly for optimal energy efficiency. This will help you save on heating and cooling costs.

Unfinished wood shutters can be constructed with operable louvers or fixed louvers in a variety of configurations, and can be crafted from various species of wood, including poplar, cherry, maple, cedar, mahogany, oak, and teak.
