This is an important step when designing a garden.

The first thing you should do is pick out a material to use for borders. You’ll want to separate your garden from grass and other plants. Another good idea is to have some kind of mesh support for your new plants.

Most people will choose either a metal or a wood barrier for their garden. Boards stacked up around a garden will give it the nice wood-cabin effect. Or you could get some cheap metal lining from your local Menard’s or Home Depot. This stuff is pretty easy to install and gives a very modern look to your garden.

Another choice could be to build your border out of flagstone. This natural stone material is great for buildings paths, patios, outdoor fireplaces, and tree borders. Of course, there are also other rock materials you could use.

Something else you want to take into account is some kind of support for your plants. Most gardening stores sell small, cone-shaped mesh supports to help hold up your plants. Once they get enough strength to hold themselves up, you would simply cut the support away.

Another important part in designing a garden is how much soil should you buy? Depending on what your growing, dig out the ideal depth of soil for your plant. You can then measure how many cubic feet your garden is, and that tells you how much soil you need.

I always like to buy a few extra bags just to make sure I have enough for the job. Also if you’re working on very dry, cracked ground that has a lot of rocks and gravel, you should add a couple inches of soil onto the recommended depth.

Plant arrangement is another important decision you’ll need to make when designing your garden. Certain plants may hog all the water and not let others get any, so you have to make sure you have a good watering system. Put these plants next to a plant with weaker, shorter roots, and your asking for disaster.

Modern landscape design is the usage of many materials that are available locally or abroad. As for most contractors, the fusion between East and West have been a more popular choice for new homeowners when it comes to creating a garden or patio. Sometimes, the more surreal the design tends to be better, which would not sacrifice the idea of asymmetry that wouldn’t be too difficult for the homeowner to walk around the garden.

Some of the designs that have been displayed utilizes the full effect of a small waterfall using piles of rock, along with a foliage of exotic plants that surrounds the front. Stacked stones are another great way when it comes to landscapes, especially when it comes to certain areas where trees are located. Flagstone steps are also a novelty when it comes to creating a patio with an available table and chairs for the purpose of relaxation. For most designs, they even find a way to make swimming pools even more attractive using flagstones and a small waterfall to complete the effect.

The initial design for modern landscapes would require a large enough investment; most preferably those who wish to start building a house with a good size of land. Not so much of a requirement, most contractors would recommend starting off with what they have in terms of property size before choosing a theme and calculating the costs for labor and materials. References can be found just about anywhere these days, ranging from a few films, television and even the internet, where most of them do offer their services. Construction may take several days depending on the size, of course, while the more simpler ones, like flagstone steps that follows to a brick patio with a nearby pergola are considered as a bit cheaper.

The steps needed are often to most obvious when it comes to modern landscapes, as it requires a building permit, considering the alterations needed that doesn’t affect the plot of land. Materials like rocks, wood and even metal cannot be replaced with cheaper alternatives, as it only undermines the original purpose. As such, some of the landscapes seen have been from those who can really afford it and others from public parks like the ones in Boston and New York.

The patio deck is a social area of the house and how it is designed can say a million things about you. With the many designs available to choose from, you might be at a standstill in the selection process. Now, if you are an open-minded person, then this concept of personal design for your patio can greatly increase the chances of customizing the area according to your taste. The most common characteristics of the design that many people are looking for is a low maintenance, easy to install, and stylish patio.

Of course, a do-it-yourself patio design may need a little bit more time and effort to make, but this can also save you a whole lot. Basically, the idea here is to make sure that you are up for your own personal design in this social area of the house. Patios are usually placed either at the front or back side of the house. The placement of the patio can also contribute to the type of design you might be interested in.

There are three types of patio decks:

Concrete

The first type is the concrete type. This is the basic type of patio that is durable, low maintenance and easier to do. Concrete is almost like clay which can be textured and molded into whatever pattern you would like to have in your patio. There are slabs that can simply be put together like a big puzzle to create a dazzling pattern. In clean and well-kept gardens, most homeowners usually use concrete to hinder the growth of weeds — that is, if the patio is next to the garden. For more innovative ideas, you can check the newest designs in home interior magazines, and if you need some of the suppliers, the yellow pages is a good place to start.

Flagstones

Flagstones or other natural rocks and bricks have also been increasingly popular among patio deck designs. That is because of the readily available supplies and easier management of the patio. In this type, you have to be able to fit the stones according to the vision or inspiration that you have in mind without having to end up with an overly structured patio. One good thing about the natural stones or bricks is that they can withstand the extremes of weather. This is a good investment for those who plan to have low maintenance and long-lasting design.

Wood

Of course, do not forget about the wooden patio decks. Not many homes can afford to have a wooden patio as the weather conditions can get in the way. Another thing is that there might be a little bit of uncertainty in the level of how long the structure could last. On the other hand, there are types of sturdy woods that can take on extreme weather, but these are usually more expensive than the conventional ones.

There are so many things that you can do when it comes to the design of your patio. This depends mainly on the material that you are planning to use. So, always be sure of the design you want, plan it, and purchase the necessary materials for building the patio. With your determination and personal touch, your patio deck would likely be the favorite social part of the house.

By using different kinds of rock and materials, you can build any variety of beautiful patios.

Slate is a popular flooring material and it can work great for a patio too. Slate patios are made of this fine type of rock which retains its natural appearance and is smooth and flat. You can get slate in a variety of textures and colors and you can get it at most landscaping outlets.

Brick patios can be designed in many colors, textures, styles, and patterns. This is one of the advantages of brick and makes it very popular. You can use your imagination with brick to make your patio as creative as you want it to be. If ten different people set out to design and build a brick patio, they would inevitably come back with ten different patio designs.

Flagstone patios are very durable when exposed to the elements. Flagstone does not crack very easily and it is not damaged by termites or other such insects. Wood patios will have both of those problems. If you want to make sure your patio will last a long time, Flagstone is one of the materials you will want to consider.

Stone patios can be made out of many different kinds of stone. Flagstone, bluestone, fieldstone, and slate are just some of the choices you have. You can usually find stone for your stone patio at landscaping outlets.

Finally, if you do decide on a concrete patio, you now have a choice of making the concrete texture a little more exciting than in years past. You can use a concrete dye to give the concrete a more worn look and to give it some variety of color. The patio is really just another room in your house and you should try to make it as interesting and exciting as possible.

Adding a flagstone patio to your home will provide your household with a whole new living area and come in very handy when you want to entertain your friends or family. This type of backyard accent will boost the value of your home and at the same time provide an area for you and your family to enjoy.

Patios are normally built with pavers, concrete, or flagstone. Patios constructed with flagstone offer up a product that will hold for decades as long as the stones are well taken care of. Because flagstone is porous, it’s susceptible to staining and breakage. Fortunately, flagstone is very easy to care for and maintain.

If you are going to invest in a patio, then there are certain maintenance steps you should take to protect your investment and help your patio hold up as the years go on. Without any type of protection, flagstone can begin to shed and the surface can stain and discolor giving it a dull and dingy look.

Flagstone is usually made from layers of sandstone that have bonded together to form rock. Over time, a shedding process begins. Spalling is the name given to this shedding process. The higher quality flagstones shed slower because the stone is harder and denser. The shedding is worse when the stone changes levels. Water can then work its way below the top layer. Then in the colder months, the water freezes and can cause pieces of stone to fall off.

SEALING A PATIO:

You can add a sealer that is specifically made for any natural stone to help prevent the water from getting under the stone surface. If your patio has already started to shed, you should remove any weak pieces that are already beginning to break off. Remove the damaged stone first. If you need to, replace broken stone before adding the sealant.

Be sure the surface is clean and free of loose debris. Similar to waxing a floor, you always want to add the protective sealant to a clean floor.

CLEANING A FLAGSTONE PATIO:

You’ll need a flagstone cleaner, an outdoor broom made with synthetic bristles, a bucket and a pressure washer.

It is recommended that you clean your flagstone patio twice a year but most people just give their patio an annual spring cleaning. Your local hardware store will sell cleaners specifically made for cleaning flagstone. You’ll use the bucket for mixing the solution.

Using the bristle push broom, apply the cleaning mixture making sure you cover and brush the solution onto every stone surface and all of the connecting mortar. You may need to apply an extra amount to any areas that are stained. Then let the solution soak in for 5-10 minutes. If there are still some stubborn stains remaining, give them a second application.

Finally, use your garden hose or pressure washer to rinse off the cleaner. Once the area is dry, you are ready to put your furniture back.

The sedimentary rock gets its beauty from the mineral quartz and muscovite Mica, thus creating all different types of colors. As you are aware, no two flagstone pieces are alike, and that is what draws so many people to creating their own flagstone patio or walkway.

With so many different options and designs to choose from, here is just a list of a few ideas that you can implement when you go about designing and creating your first flagstone patio or walkway.

1. You can use small bricks that will give your patio a more structured look. Because flagstone bricks are similar in size and shape, you flagstone will look organized and neat. If you are looking for a irregular look, number 2 might be better.

2. Another design that most people like is using slabs of different style flagstone. This gives the flagstone a irregular look and really stands out from everything else around it. You can choose from horizontal or vertical patters, or even use a variety of different colors that blend well together.

3. The last design is can be used for a wall or house siding. You can find flagstone rocks that will give your house or wall a more structured look.

When thinking about designing your outdoor lighting system you need to take a few things into consideration so you will get the greatest use and enjoyment of your yard. How you plan to use your yard will dictate some basic things that will need to be taken into account before one light switch is flipped. For instance what will you use to power your lights and where it is located, how many circuits will be needed and their position in the yard? Then there’s the all important decision on where to put the controls, you would be surprised at how often that is the last thing considered and can be the most important factor in creating beautiful outdoor lighting for your home. So go into this process with a little forethought and make it much easier on yourself.

Choosing the Type of Lighting

Find a legal pad or paper and pen for this next. You don’t have to be a graphic artist but just roughly draw out your yard and how you plan to use the different spaces. Once you’ve done this look at what lighting will best meet your needs in relation to how you plan to use that space.

Outdoor Lighting is basically broken up into five main categories:

Ornamental Lighting is used to highlight certain plants, trees or hardscape such as walls, fountains and statues.

Amenity Lighting is the kind of lighting we think of when considering function. What I mean by that is in the patio dining area we would probably have lighting that was a little brighter and focused on the table or eating area. It can also be used for safety purposes, for instance around the driveway area when drivers are pulling in or moving their cars they can see other vehicles and children that might be in the area.

Task Lighting would be considered focused Amenity Lighting, for instance a light attached to the barbecue grill so you can see what you’re doing or not doing and should be doing with the steaks! It would also be used in a work area like around a shed or a potting table.

Access Lighting is lighting we use to allow us to move around the yard. It could be along pathways from the deck to the pool, lighting on the steps and above doorways.

Security Lighting is just as it reads. It’s used to try and make your home look like the last place a thief wants to visit. We typically think of motion detector lights that will come on when someone walks in front of them making any burglary attempt much more difficult and way to risky for the burglar. It can also just give the illusion that the homeowners are in the house which that alone can be enough to deter a thief looking for an easy home to rob.

Some spaces in your rough draft will have more than one type of lighting serving the area. One example would be a pathway using access lighting as it winds through a wooded area that had a statue with ornamental lighting bringing attention to it features. Then there are some other lights that will be specific to certain areas like the swimming pool that will be lit by underwater lighting and a tennis court with its use of floodlights.

This is the first stage of creating year outdoor lighting plan and you should just focus on getting the basic rough draft completed and not worry too much about the details yet. In your next step you will begin to choose what kind of effects you want your lighting to provide in those spaces you have in your plan.

The landscaping in the front yard can be the type that forms clumps instead of the grass that must be cut, while the back yard and garden landscaping you may want to incorporate some taller versions of decorative grass.

Planting tall ornamental grasses in a group or in a row can create a privacy screen from neighbors, air conditioning units, trash cans or something else you want to hide. Some of the tall grasses include the big blue-stem with beautiful flowers and blue-grey leaves and can range in height from four feet to seven feet tall; pampas grass has tall pink flowers and will range from six to fifteen feet tall and the giant reed grass can range between fourteen and twenty feet tall and has leaves that are three inches across. Ornamental grasses need to be cut back in the spring which means you will lose that privacy screen while it grows back.

These beautiful landscaping plants bring texture to most flower beds. By using two or three varieties of miscanthus or some fountain grass will give this effect to hydrangea and lavender. Mounded grasses will complement the plants that have creative textures and the vertical grasses supplement the plants that are more rounded. A lot of your hardscapes can become inviting and warm when you use ornamental grasses around them. Some decorative grasses do not bloom so they will not attract bees and would be good to plant around a swimming pool.

You can also grow these grasses in decorative containers and place them on patios, balconies, decks, or even on a high-rise rooftop garden. With so many different shapes, sizes and colors of containers you can have an entire container garden of just ornamental and decorative grasses in all different species. You can mix and match the grass colors and sizes to coordinate with the sizes and colors of your containers. Do not limit the ornamental grasses just in your landscaping; you can also highlight a regular landscaping by placing some of these containers filled with these grasses to enhance an existing landscaped area.

If you plant the same decorative grass inter-mingled among some of your flowering plants it can help tie your entire garden together. If your flowers are the tall version you may think about using a blue fescue which is a clump forming grass; a tall feather reed grass works better with the lower blooming flowers and will also look nice in a vegetable garden. You do not want a grass that will run because they spread too much and will eventually look very weedy.

These clumping or low grasses make good borders around flower beds because they are small but you will need to plant close together so it will resemble a border. Ornamental grasses will stand out at the end of the season when most of the perennials and annuals look tired and worn out. Some grasses such as big blue-stem and switch-grass have a fall leaf color that is very beautiful; some grasses will have colorful seed heads.

You can attract the birds to the garden with decorative and ornamental grasses in the landscaping. The birds find shelter in some of the larger grasses, the blades of some the leaves are good for constructing nests, and the seeds that these grasses produce are enjoyable to the birds. Just remember to plant the native grasses for your area. The low growing and clumping or mounded grasses make excellent ground covers; they smother out weeds while creating the textures for the landscape. Try adding some decorative grasses to your flower garden or front lawn as part of your next landscaping project.

Container Gardens

Planting in pots or containers is a great way to soften hardscape areas. A stone patio can become a burst of color with a few well-placed planters and wooden decks can be festooned with blooms, if that is your pleasure. And the best part is: container gardening is easy!

Why is it so easy when even the greenest-thumbed among us sometimes struggle to establish and maintain a good perennial border? Because everything is within your control. Is it, quite simply, contained. The down side of this is that if neglected a container garden will not last very long. So be forewarned: you will get out a container garden only the effort you put into it. Proceed thoughtfully and you are almost certainly assured of success. Just follow these tips and you will be well on your way to being a container gardener.

Drainage

Remember that word. It is the basis of all container gardens. Without it plants are suffocated, soil is waterlogged, and pests and diseases thrive. When buying a pot always make sure there’s a hole in the bottom otherwise it’s a non-starter. The object here is to allow water to flow through the container, but to retain the soil, so at the bottom of the pot place some broken pottery or large pebbles before soil is added. You might also put a small square of window screen material over the hole itself – this will discourage those pesky critters from crawling in and making a home.

Soil

There are all manner of soil combinations that can be used and I will go into more detail in other articles, but here we will talk in general terms. Once your drainage material is in place fill the pot a third full of your planting mix and water it thoroughly to get rid of all the air pockets. Some people like to soak the pots beforehand if they are made of clay – it helps them absorb water better. Add more planting mix to about 6 inches below the rim of the pot – or 2 inches below the rim of a window box or similar container – and soak thoroughly again. You are now ready to plant.

Plants

Although we talk about Xeriscape plants for the garden, in containers you are not limited to these as you can amend the soil and watering to accommodate just about any plant you wish. Think about three things when selecting you plant material:

1) Size/Shape

2) Color

3) Foliage

Try to come up with a mix that will be pleasing to the eye. Choose one large plant with some height to it that will be your centerpiece and then fill in around it. Don’t just mix flower colors together, experiment with different textures of foliage. Having a plant that hangs over the side of the pot is always one of my favorite features.

A simple example would be a center of Coreopsis surrounded by Sweet Alyssum, Coleus and purple Petunia. Have fun with combinations. Walk around your local nursery and see what looks good and imagine how things might look in combination.

With the largest plant in hand dig a slight depression in the soil if needed – the plant should sit slightly proud of the soil when filled to about an inch below the rim of the container. Use your fingers to untangle any roots that may have grown in a spiral at the bottom of the plant and place in the container spreading these roots as you go. Place the smaller plants around the larger one, planting as before, then backfill with planting mixture to about an inch below the rim. Water thoroughly.

I always add a layer of fibrous mulch to the top which helps with water retention and regulation of soil temperature.

Placement

You may need to experiment a little with container placement on your deck or patio as sunlight exposure is a factor with more delicate plants. I use a dolly to move the heavier pots around. Just be careful not to handle them too harshly as clay pots, especially, will crack.

It is always a good idea to raise the container about a half inch off the ground to facilitate drainage. Flat stones work well.

We’ve only scratched the surface of container gardening in this article. The possibilities are nearly endless in plant combinations and container styles. Remember, you can also hang them from windows, fences and walls. You can place them within your garden beds for a delicious accent to foundation plants. And I’m sure you’ll come up your own ideas as well.
