A simple front yard overhaul to restore curb appeal can often be as much of a challenge as designing and building an entirely new landscape. It’s like a “not being able to see the forest through the trees” kind of a thing. One thing that’s helpful with this is to be clear from the very beginning about your budget and whether this is a simple clean up, a partial landscape, or an entirely new front yard landscape. However, even if you don’t want to do a full scale landscape, the end result is still a matter of following the same principles of designing a new front yard. Entryways, access, and parking areas should already be be designated in an existing landscape. If not, design them in if they are a necessary addition. Then you can focus the rest of the design, plants, and plating beds around them.

In restoring an existing front yard, assessment of the problem areas is always the first step. Use your camera to get a better perspective on this. Take a few pictures of the landscaping and entryway from different angles. From this you should see a whole different picture of what your yard really looks like. Make note of it and what you want to change. Make note of things like chipped and cracked concrete, overgrown weeds, dead lawn, dead plants, etc. Does your front entryway look tired and neglected? Look at all the details. A poor landscape is usually a combination of several elements combined.

Remove any dead or unwanted shrubs. You can always replace them with the same or similar types. However, for a fresher look in new and old landscapes, try using other intreresting textures like ornamental grasses in place of shrubs and hedges. Not only do they provide a new texture and shape, they also add motion and winter interest to the landscaping. Use them in the same spots as singular or in groups. Prune trees and tall healthy shrubs to restore their beauty. Often unnoticed, these are allowed to grow unchecked and make the yard look uncared for.

Add a little color, interest, and a whole new dimension by placing some large planting containers and pots on the sides of your front steps or on either side of your walkway. Fill these with a combination of trailing vines, ornamental grasses, and colorful flowers. This will brighten your entryway as well as make it look more inviting and welcoming. Planters are also great for using plants from different climates and seasons and being able to move them inside for the Winter.

When you add flowers and plants to your yard or front entry, keep in mind that less is sometimes more. Don’t try to add every color of the rainbow but focus on a simple color scheme. Pick two or three colors as well as a few evergreen varieties and repeat them throughout the landscaping. We’re only trying to clean up and create a framework to begin with. We can add more later if needed. This will help create unity and retain some of the existing balance until then.

Edging any walkways, driveways, and sidewalks will do wonders for making the entire yard look sharp and clean. For now you don’t even need fill everything with plants. A layer of protective mulch along the edges instead of flowers or shrubs can look really great. Make sure that any existing sidewalks, driveways, and steps are clean and in good shape. These areas are totally visible so fix any stains or cracks. Severely cracked concrete, brick, or stone sidewalks should either be repaired to good shape or replaced.

If your yard and entryway are too straight, hard, formal, and boring, soften the look by adding some curved flower beds. An island bed is also a great addition to add interest and shape to a front yard lawn area. Some beds can be used to line and highlight the front entryway helping it to flow from the street or driveway to the front door.

For some night time interest and safety, consider adding electric or lighting to the landscape. You can install low voltage lights yourself or let a professional contractor do the job. Not only do they provide a safety factor, but they also create a sense of elegance on the home at night.

And one more thing that is so often overlooked. Don’t forget the home itself. No matter how beautiful the landscaping is, no one will even see it if the home is in bad shape and in need of repairs. New paint if needed, repairing roof and siding, washing windows, hanging gutters, and repairing anything else that needs it will do so much for the home as well as help the curb appeal of the front yard rd landscaping.

You have dreamed about all the fun that goes with a hot tub. Now the fun really begins when you start looking through all the hot tub gazebo designs! The designs are endless with numerous possibilities.

Before running out and buying any old gazebo, think about what you need which will help maximize the enjoyment you will receive from your spa! There are many styles of gazebos, as well as features to enhance your hot tub. You can buy a ready-made gazebos as well as affordable kits.

A lattice frame entwined with thick growing vines helps to add privacy from your neighbors, as well as muffle sounds. Location in your yard is an important point to consider. Would you like to be able to see stars or the sun? Do you have noisier neighbors on one side and maybe not the other? Is there easy access to the motor?

Look for a design that compliments your yard design. Some manufacturers have kits that match your tub. If you have pine wood decking, use pine for your gazebo. If brickwork is in your yard, you can design a gazebo in brickwork. Would you like a rectangular or octagon shaped gazebo? L-shaped or circular gazebos are a bit more difficult to build but still a possibility. Flooring is also an important consideration. Will it be tile, or a wooden floor?

What kind of roof is there to pick from? There is a tiered pagoda roof design with 2-3 tiers, or a traditional style with wooden shingles. In order to star gaze, you may decide on an open type roof to add a little ambiance. Also available is a conical roof style. There is also a wide variety of materials to choose for the roof of your gazebo.

If you are looking to entertain a lot, do you want to include a bar built into your gazebo? Or do you want room for an entertainment system? Or maybe a spot for exercise equipment and towels? Creativity is endless, depending on what you want.

There are also the pre-built gazebos in an array of styles. Shop around and you will be amazed at the hot tub gazebo designs that are available to create your own pleasurable getaway.

There is a trend afoot that spreads the idea that yards can be attractive and at the same time useful for outdoor activities. The easiest way would perhaps be to call it the garden look. It’s a way of putting more variety and functionality into lawns. New materials like natural and artificial stone join up nicely with shrubbery of all shapes and sizes to bring about this new look. With it the lawn is rebalanced to put more emphasis on shrubbery and ground cover. It’s a step forward for the environment.

Planning is one of the thing that carries gardeners through the long Winter months. There are ideas to explore, catalogues to study and problem areas to analyze. Along with additions to existing plantings, there are more structural things to consider. Steps and walkways are important features for creating drama and require careful planning.

Depending on the look, a variety of stone products are available. Some, like artificial stone, are easy enough for DIY, while others would be better done by a skilled stone mason. Projects like this require good visualization. Prepare yourself with sketches or landscape software. Although most landscape packages are geared towards flowers and greenery, they can be very useful for folks who are bashful of their drawing skills. Visit your local garden centers too, for books useful information.

Manmade rock is a durable product that works well in high traffic areas around the yard. Designed to be sturdy and easy to install, they come in a wide variety of colors and textures. With a little reading, a DIY can take on the project or turn it over to an experienced landscaper. The fundamentals of working with this material is pretty simple if you follow the guidelines. Usually a base of gravel and sand separated by a barrier of landscape cloth is what it takes for a flat stable foundation. Landscapers will usually recommend artificial rock for a low cost way to deal with erosion problems and for creating attractive patios and walkways.

But there are other types of artificial rocks, designed for special purposes, these products are, like hollow boulders, very useful. These thin, fake rocks are actually made of modern materials like plastic and fiberglass. Cast from real rocks, they offer an option to home owners who have an unsightly utility they wish would disappear. For example, a conspicuous object like control box that stands a foot or more above ground and detracts from the appearance and value of the house. This is where hollow fake rocks, with their light weight and realistic look, turn lemons into lemonade.

Beyond the utilitarian task of hiding things, fake rocks work well as an accent in the garden. Here they blend naturally with the surroundings and offer a different style of beauty. One of a stoic nature that landscape designers find appropriate for most any casual setting. A landscaping tool with duel purpose, worth considering for your next outdoor project. Pick up one for your garden.

It is rather hard to decide which one of the multitude of landscape designs are the best designs for your yard, but certainly, there is no way not to find something magnificent for any type of home.

If the front yard is the one that needs improvement, the bushes are the first to start with. Forget about the classic small short trimmed bushes. Taller and beautifully shaped bushes are the best appearance in your front yard. If you do not want the bushes to be replaced, you can just allow it to grow until your wanted size, and then have them trimmed in oval shapes, with fantastic curves, this way you give a very futuristic landscape designs to your yard. When it comes to choosing a shape over the monotonous classic shape, there are a lot of designs to decide on. You can even keep the small size of your bushes, but trim them into a totally new way.

The placement of the bushes is also important, so for the best design for your yard, make sure that these are properly placed. Generally, the bushes are used in landscape design to create the delimitation between the front yard and the side walk. But you can use them for something else. Being so easy to trim, you can place bushes trimmed in a tree shape next to your flower garden. But make sure that both plants have enough minerals or your flowers will dry, Bushes tend to absorb most of the nutrition from the soil.

The small “trees” and the flower garden would look great. However do not place more that 4 bushes in a large garden, and just one for a small garden.

Thinking of rearranging the backyard? You can try to cover it up with grass or other materials. It is preferable for the backyard to be covered with grass if you have small children. If you choose a strong material, the child can hurt himself by falling.

All the designs that you want to use have to be not only practical, but also good looking, resistant and easy to maintain. For instance, it would not be such a good idea to buy chairs with a small design like wood sculptures, because these would take forever to clean, and the very next day, the dust will be back on them!

If you’re considering getting a landscape design software program, there are a number of features you have to be aware of. With these features, you will be able to come up with all sorts of design possibilities for your yard without having to make any physical modifications to the landscape just yet. Get to know these 5 common features you will see in the majority of landscape design software programs.

Templates

Most landscape design software programs have templates, or gardens and other terrain layouts that can stimulate you or guide your thinking as you plan your own yard. You may either just use these design templates as they come or you can modify them to fit your design preference.

Element Manipulation

Novice and experienced landscapers will find this feature impressive and handy. With the element manipulation tool, you will be able to drag and drop many landscape elements in and out of your virtual terrain. The elements involved might be vegetation, shrubs, water features, gazebos, etc. Good software will have incredibly high numbers of sample elements that you can select from and put in your design.

You could easily create your very own virtual yard and give your creativity free rein. Other element manipulation features include modifying the seasons and conditions in your virtual yard. You can also enter the kind of soil you have into the computer and see how well the virtual yard is just like the real thing.

Seasons

A really visionary part of some examples of landscaping software is the seasonal feature. With this particular feature, you will see how your yard appears like as it mimics the changing seasons in your region. This feature will replicate crops growing throughout the seasons — leaves turning golden in the fall, trees shedding their leaves in the wintertime, and flowers turning green once more at the first sign of spring. You can design your yard according to the seasons and how they’ll influence the look of your yard.

Editing

The capability to modify your plans is essential. If it’s your first time looking for a landscape design software, look for the editing features of programs you’re considering and test it out at the store. You wouldn’t want to buy a program that doesn’t have this very important feature. You do not want to get something you aren’t comfortable using.

Design Layering

This is a really useful feature, especially when you use it along with the element manipulation tool. Design layering helps to keep the entire design or picture in its place as you mess with a single piece. You can specify one object for manipulation and keep the remainder of the yard design steady.

Most commonly, it is the front yard which is given enough attention in terms of decoration because this is one of the most visible places of the house. There are considerations that should be put into account when it comes to front yard landscaping designs to make your work perfect. The factors written below are some of the things worth considering when choosing the design you can use for your front yard, better read on:

1. The Layout

Before anything else, consider the layout design which may either be symmetrical design or asymmetrical design. You are free to choose whatever you like, just as long as you can competently balance all elements of the landscape in order to create unity among them. In case you opt for the symmetrical design, this is like having a mirror division of the house and the front yard. This kind is best for those with doors at the center of the house and those houses that contains equal amount of windows. Going for symmetrical pattern means going through a lot of work because this is difficult to achieve but the result is great because it can compliment houses effectively thus creating a formal look.

On the other hand, there is the asymmetrical plan for front yard landscaping designs which is famous for its relaxed look that it gives. This is easier to do. Be reminded though that despite the fact that this is the opposite of the symmetrical design, asymmetrical also offers unity of look.

2. Additional Touches

After creating the design layout, it is the best time to add touches that can further perk up the look of the whole unit. Some of the things which you can use are trees, plants, shrubs, flowering plants, and a lot more. It is important that you put into mind the result of a particular plant when you put such into your house. It is also vital that you see to it that the plants and trees you will match one another.

These plants and trees should be placed at the right position as well. Do not plant trees in front of your house because this will block the overall look of your place. Also, it is important to never plant shrubs which are too close to the driveway. In case you have to plant trees, think about its grownup size so you don’t end up having an extremely large tree in front of your house.

3. Add Other Touches

By the time when you are finish working with plants and trees that you will incorporate in your front yard landscaping designs, you can shift your focus to other additional touches like walls, fences, paving, and a lot more. They should complement your whole house. You are free to add elements which you think will further augment the look of your place and consider adding extra materials which you and the whole family can use as well such as swings for children and coffee table for grownups.

in the front yard or at the front door. The main purpose of this
lighting is for safety, yet outdoor lighting can be used plenty
of other functional things.

Outdoor lighting can be used for landscape lighting. By placing
lights in well thought out areas, you can outline the curves and
shapes of the grass, illuminate a pathway, or draw interest to
specific plants or objects. Illuminating gardens at night is a
great way to use outdoor, landscape lighting.

Some flowers actually only bloom at night, so lighting up these
plants is a must if you ever want to see their flowers well.
Lighting can enhance other unique plants with interesting colors
and shapes. The light will show the natural beauty in a new way.

One lighting technique that you can use to illuminate your
plants, day or night, is to use recessed spotlights under your
trees or bushes. The lights will spotlight the trees and bushes,
but since the lights are coming from below, the textures, colors,
and general look of the trees or bushes will look different than
you have ever seen before.

Lighting up water features at night can be extremely beautiful.
You can light a pond, water container garden, or any water
feature. Waterproof lights can even be installed underwater,
creating beautiful colors of glowing water. This looks
especially good with a fountain, or if you have any fish in your
pond.

Whether or not you have a formal path through your garden built
of stone, bricks, or wood, you can still light up a walkway.
Lighting an specific area where you commonly walk so you can
enjoy your garden at night is a great idea. You can use small
pathway lights along each side of the walkway to do this.

You can save money on power bills, while at the same time
avoiding having to remember to turn your lights on and off each
day, by using solar powered landscape lighting. Solar powered lights power
up when there is a lot of sunlight, and turn on to be used when
the sunlight becomes low. It is a great option, but you may or
may not prefer a more typical, elaborate lighting system that
runs on timers. The choice is yours.

Before you light up your garden at night, you’ll need to research
the options available. In doing this, you’ll have to keep in
mind the lighting effects that you hope to create with your
lights. After you choose the lights and what they will be used
for, you will need to choose where to place them and how to power
them. After you are done planning, you can buy and install your
lights. After that, you will be free to enjoy your garden, even at
night!

Add safety and highlights to your home with landscape lighting, transform your landscape from daylight colors to nighttime reflections creating a complete new looks Learn more at

There are many benefits to an edible landscape including saving money on groceries and enjoying food that is fresher and more nutritious than the produce in our supermarkets which is often picked before it is ripe (nutrients aren’t developed yet either) and shipped long distances.

Is edible landscape gardening for you?
Do you want to grow food for your family to help reduce grocery expenses and help recession-proof your household budget? Then this type of gardening is a perfect way to help achieve that goal. Seeds cost next to nothing and in just a few weeks you’ll be able to start enjoying the fresh greens or radishes that you’ve planted as a border planting. Other plants started from seed take longer, but they are well worth the wait!
Buying established nursery plants is also an option, and while it’s more expensive than seeds, you’ll be able to enjoy home-grown treats sooner than if you started from seed and the cost is still less than what you’d spend at the supermarket for the same items.

Where there’s a Will, There’s a Way
A large space is not required to grow fruits and vegetables, so don’t let something like living in a city apartment hold you back. The key to achieving your goal of growing your own foods is to use the space you have as efficiently as possible. Even apartment dwellers can grow herbs, greens, tomatoes, and even specialized varieties of fruits. Many years ago, I lived in a courtyard-style apartment building in Chicago and was able to grow herbs and lettuce on my window sill! Container gardens are easy to establish and care for; all you need to do is decide how many containers you can accommodate, and provide water and light.

Doesn’t growing your own food take a lot of time?
When you integrate fruits and vegetables into your landscape or a container garden, it doesn’t take as much time as you’d think to take care of the plants, garden beds, etc. In fact, there’s been many an evening after work that I end up wondering around the yard looking for something to do! This is partly because of the type of plants you’ll be adding to your landscape. For example, an edible groundcover growing in a garden bed helps squeeze out weeds, thus eliminating the time you need to spend weeding. Utilize the practice of companion planting you’ll also be able to control harmful pests naturally – yet another time saver. I also highly recommend using soaker hoses. You can water plants slowly at the roots where it’s most beneficial and causes the least leaf damage, and you don’t have to worry about timing the sprinklers, moving the hose, trampling plants and so forth.

Admittedly, when it’s time to harvest the garden bounty, I spend more time in the yard and kitchen. But, when you’re picking foods you’ve grown yourself, the extra time is rewarded by fresh delicious food that is not only good for you, but is helping to trim your grocery costs.

The possibilities are nearly limitless.
Think outside the garden plot. You don’t have to have a dedicated vegetable garden to grow great tasting fruits and vegetables. Plant strawberries, nasturtiums, low-growing kitchen herbs, or a creeping berry as a ground cover. Train peas and pole beans to climb a trellis or arbor, or plant grapes vines as a perennial option. Add a fruit or nut tree or two for shade, and use berry bushes for shrubs or hedges. Even in neighborhoods that require perfectly manicured lawns and landscapes, edible plantings are a great option! They flower in the spring, produce attractive fruit and have attractive foliage in the fall. And, they can help reduce the amount of work you need to do to maintain the look of your yard. The bigger your landscape beds and more edible plants you have, the less lawn there is to care for!

The front yard, as the name suggests is the place in front of your house where all your visitors and guests which come to the home see first. It is a great thing to have a both yards to a home as they both can be utilized to optimize homes pace in different ways.

Develop the front yard well for a better view:

The Front yard can flaunt a variety of designs. Lawns in front of your house can be developed well into a garden. With the right designs you can make your garden look bigger than it actually is. These are generally comprised of the entrance to your house, the porch and the driveway. A lot of curves and flowing water can be used. Decorative sculptures and arches can also be a part of its landscape design.

To contribute to the overall look of the yard design, you can try out different color schemes in the garden. Some sports enthusiastic families also love to create a sports area in this space. A basket ball court, tennis ball court etc. These courts are generally kept on the sides and not exactly in the center or the front of the house.

Backyard provides more utility value:

It is mainly the shady and fruit bearing trees that dominate the designs in the backyard. If there isn’t enough space in the front for the tennis court, you can have it put in the backyard. Back yard design provides more utility value as compared to the front yard design. Swimming pools are generally shielded from public view and hence can be placed in the backyard.

Backyards tend to look smaller than the front yards because of utility. Space becomes a constraint due to a number of different design demands. Supplies to the house can be provided through the back door facing the backyard. As it is blocked from view of people, you can even stack a lot of things which are required for use later. For those romantically inclined, back yards also have the space for moon walks. Nevertheless, both the areas add value and aesthetic appeal to the home.

So you want to know how to build a botanical garden in your yard?

Before you start digging carefully consider what you really want from the garden. You may soon discover that an average size garden cannot easily provide the requirements for a botanical garden.

Why?

The primary role of a botanical garden is to focus on providing a plant collection with some scientific basis. These gardens are not designed for the outdoor domestic needs of singles, families or a couple.

Prior to any design concept it is important to acknowledge that the look of your garden will be influenced by the more mundane domestic garden items such as a children’s play equipment, potting shed, household bins, clothes line and so on.

The plant collection needs to fit around a family’s requirement. If it is the other way around the plants are likely to be destroyed and the garden will look a total mess.

Sure a botanic garden can provide a children’s playgrounds and outdoor seating areas but these activities can often be separated from the plant collections. It is unlikely that a play area is also the only place available to locate a very rare plant.

In general, botanical gardens are large whilst domestic gardens are comparatively small. Creating a successful botanical garden in a small area is very different from creating one in a large area.

When space is limited it is very important for every object in the garden, including plants, to take on more than one function. A shrub in a small space may need to act as a screen to block out the neighbours whilst providing shade from the summer heat and add colour to a dark corner. It is hard for a plant to meet all these functional requirements plus also be from only one plant species.

Furthermore, small gardens work much better with fewer plant types rather than more. Small spaces appear much bigger and are more appealing to the eye when plants are repeated over and over again. A small garden becomes fragmented and appears disorderly when loads of different plants and garden accessories are used.

Still Want a Botanic Garden?

If you still want a botanical garden it is suggested that you select a species that will also accommodate the needs of your family. Be wary of large plants. A small garden cannot cope with a home owner’s penchant for Eucalyptus.

Why not consider a botanical garden of a small plant species within the framework of the whole garden (such as corner devoted to orchids or ferns)

If your collection does not include a plant that provides a required function (such as shade and screening) do not be scared to use another species.

Remember to repeat the use of any plants wherever possible to provide visual cohesion.
